Coin Collecting
by Suzanne
As a child I had many hobbies and collections of sorts and my collections became my hobbies. It started with rocks and seashells, including a rock polisher that I could use to polish certain rocks while others were better left natural as they were nature's works of art and I cherished them just the way they were. My hobby of collecting rocks and shells soon progressed to coin collecting and anything else that was unusual and small enough to fit into my small secret treasure box.
The collecting hobby faded away as I got older with my interest turning to more important things like boys, sports and just hanging out with my friends. Eventually all of my rocks and shells were given back to mother nature and my coins, well I still have those. I also have a 1965 two-dollar bill.
Just recently I landed on a coin site called www.coastcoin.com and re-discovered my treasured childhood hobby of collecting. After browsing various types of rare coins and currency, I decided that coin collecting isn't just another hobby it's a trade, a very unique and somewhat eccentric trade that has become very appealing to me.
I don't know much about the value of collectible coins, so I did some research. First I joined a coin forum because there is a lot of free information to pick up in niche forums like that. They gave me great advice. I was referred to www.coinworld.com where I found a wealth of information. Coin World is a great source for beginners and connoisseurs a like. I found a lot of answers to my questions there and they also list upcoming coin shows. I have decided to attend the next one in my area to get an up close and personal glimpse of the coins and currency on display, meet some interesting people and hopefully gain more insight.
For me at this time coin collecting is still a hobby. I just don't know enough about the value of old and rare coins and currency to buy and sell, but I'm working on it. I imagine the very experienced coin collectors and dealers started with childhood treasures that grew into a very lucrative and interesting career of buying and selling rare coins and currency. I can't wait to go to my first show.
